we have not seen speaker boehner or nancy pelosi, leader pelosi walk into the white house yet. before i plugged in at least she hadn't, they hadn't arrived. but it is a matter of minutes until they should all take their seats in the oval office and begin the discussion that should help resolve whether or not the nation will go over the fiscal cliff in the next few days. this won't end the discussion, but it should launch us into the next steps. can they hash out the basic form of an agreement, a scaled down agreement. if they reach that threshold, can the senators assure each other that they have the time to get this done and no senator will filibuster it? if that's the case, they bring it to a vote tomorrow, and/or sunday and does the house agree to bring it to a vote on the floor of the house. those are a lot of ifs and we have until just monday night to get it all done. >> you'll be standing by, watching it all with every single detail. thank you, jessica yellin. now to lisa desjardins, live on capitol hill for us. so, lisa, just caught you talking with senator ben nelson of

the difference between what he did and what pelosi did to get the health care bill through, pelosi went through her caucus and broke every arm in the caucus that was giving her trouble and then made the announcement. boehner went out and made the announcement first then couldn't get his people. that's a leadership mistake. >> in that moment you have to concede, governor, she had it within -- >> i think boehner does have courage and i think he could be a good speaker. he's just not tough enough. >> i don't agree with that. >> results show. >> look into the crystal ball here for the next couple of days. and we're going to get your predictions for next year, but just over the next couple of days, based on what you heard here today from the senators and the raucous discussion with the house members, each of you, do you think the deal is going to happen and if it happens will it pass house and senate? >> there will be a deal. i'm a little pessimistic at the moment. i hope they can get over the cliff and avoid the january 1st cutoff. my hope is they can put something together as early as janu

and the vice president, they're going to meet with house speaker john boehner, minority leader nancy pelosi, senate majority harry reid and minority leader mitch mcconnell. that is happening this afternoon. jessica yellin is there. jess, what do we know about the president's plan to get everybody in the same room? do we think there's going to be something that comes out of this? >> reporter: well, this is one of those cases where we really are going to have to wait and see, and all the parties involved are also going in with a big question mark. the idea is the expectation by many of the participants in the meeting is that they hope that they will be able to discuss more details about a scaled-down fiscal cliff plan. and maybe that could lead to some sort of agreement ideally for all parties in which all the senators say that they will not filibuster it, and it can go to a vote. and then speaker boehner could, in theory, agree to bring it to a vote on the house floor after the house comes back on sunday. and then we would get all of this behind us before new year's eve. how likely does that

could have brought it to the floor if they had even 30 democrats willing to say i'll do what nancy pelosi said we should do. and that plan "b" would have passed. it would have demonstrated we were willing to put revenue on the table and got the wheels greased a little bit for a negotiation. >> john harwood tweeted this. he said gop house members and colleagues, i blame most of this on a block of about 50 members who have the political judgment god gave a goose. do you think the far right of your party is a big part of the problem in washington right now? >> i think the extremes on both sides are a big part of the problem right now. and i've got a lot of respect for the men and women who are representing voters in their district who are telling them this. but we have to look at a broader reason why we're having members of congress coming from the perimeters. we can talk about gerrymandering of districts and the whole political process that has brought us to this place. those are the type of reforms long term that will get the congress working correctly again. >> it's a great and important

the minority puts up their chosen leader, this time nancy pelosi. it's usually pro forma, but this time it has a real weight to it, because one of the reasons we're in this situation right now is because we're waiting for john boehner to be reelected to speaker of the house before they make a move, because only if 16 or 17 republicans don't vote for the guy, he could lose. they just want to wait. >> that's, i think, a point we've all been missing here is that after plan b's gone down, there seems to be some thinking, especially in boehner land, that we don't want our fingerprints on anything that could lead to some sort of conservative ensue su sure. >> it would be very embarra embarrassing. republicans voting for someone else or abstaining, they would have to probably shut the whole house down, have a whole meeting, drum up the votes. it would be very embarrassing and i think you're also seeing it on the senate side, mitch mcconnell is thinking, senate minority leader, if john boehner doesn't want his fingerprints on something, why do i want my fin

i remember when speaker pelosi had the bill to fund the iraq war. our democratic caucus wasn't in support of that. nonetheless she put a bill on the floor where we had to fund the iraq floor. she did it because it was in the best interest of the american people. at the end of the day speaker boehner who is the speaker of the whole house has to do what is in the best interest and let the will of the house take its call. he has to move forward on this. you can't put the blame on the president. we need to go back to the speaker. >> republican congressman said this of john boehner's leadership today. >> the reason that boehnjohn bo has trouble isn't a lack of leadership, it is because he lets people participate which wasn't the case in the past. >> do you think this is true and what other options does boehner have to reach a compromise with the president? >> i think he is right. whenever you had whether nancy pelosi with his caucus or speaker boehner you have a lot of cats to herd. on these issues you have cats going different ways. the speaker may say

nancy pelosi is still able to lead her caucus. she kept every single democrat, everyone the most moderate, she kept them all in line to not vote for the boehner bill. boehner just can't do it. >> thanks so much. really good to see you dana, ryan, thanks to you both. >>> first tornadoes and now blizzard conditions. we're following several severe weather stories making it difficult for millions of americans. holly is at the world's busiest airport, hartsfield jackson in atlanta. what are you seeing there? >> reporter: well, joe, it's pretty steady here. it's getting a little bit more crowded as the evening goes on. but i can tell you that some people are heading home after christmas and finding it tough to travel today because of that massive storm barreling through the country. it's wreaking havoc on the roads and in the air. snow, ice and high winds. >> we want to get out. >> it's always scary when you're flying that you'll be stuck in the airport. >> reporter: as massive storm it that left many in the midwest and parts of the sou

does john boehner need nancy pelosi in order to get anything passed? >> reporter: yes, absolutely. no question about it. that became incredibly obvious when he couldn't even get his own republicans to effectively save them from themselves and at least have some political cover by voting to keep tax cuts in place for everybody except millionaires because they said they wouldn't help him with what they call a political ploy. i think that's true but actually talking to people on both sides of the aisle here, because the ball is now in the senate -- the senate's court, the feeling is that if they can kind of break the dam in the senate and if something actually passes, you've already seen over the past two days house republicans saying that they hadn't said before, if the senate passes something, we'll take it up. and if that's the case, the sort of betting is that with the help of the majority of the democrats, probably most of the democrats and maybe, you know, a few dozen or more republicans, that's how it would get passed. but, candy, it's still a big if, as we just witnessed, whet
